Lecture
Week 2
Mr. Hafiz briefed us on the project timeline. As the design team in this collaboration, we are responsible for developing the brand identity, designing the UI/UX, and producing the campaign media.
Week 4
As designers, we should define a clear design scope for the client after conducting comprehensive research. Providing too many broad options can make the decision-making process more difficult, resulting in the client not selecting any option.
Based on the empathy map, we selected 1-2 representative users to develop the target user personas.
Project Development
This is the Module Information Booklet for this module:
- Task 1: Empathy Map
- Task 2: Ideate Solution
- Task 3: Prototyping
- Task 4: Testing End Product
TASK 1: Empathy Map
The product we are responsible for working on is Lugmate, focusing on the fusion of durability and minimalist aesthetics for the modern traveler.
Lugmate is an AI-powered self-following suitcase designed to enable hands-free, safe, and convenient travel. Travelers often feel exhausted, struggle to navigate crowded spaces, and worry about the safety of their luggage.
For this task, as general research and interviews have been done by the business team, we focused on refining and extracting more insight from the given data.
- Target Audience
- Empathy Map
- Pain points
- Improvement
- User Needs
- Problem Statement
- User Persona
Target Audience
We target family-oriented travelers with young children and elderly parents.

Empathy Map
An empathy map is created based on 10 interviews with the target audience.
 |
| Fig. Empathy Map |
Pain points
From the 10 interviews:
- 69% said luggage is heavy or difficult to carry
- 40% have security concerns like theft or tampering
- 33% face difficulty maneuvering through crowded areas
- 12% experienced lost or misplaced luggage
Improvement
From the 10 interviews:
- Security (anti-theft, lock, alerts): 32%
- Tracking & location awareness: 28%
- Smart tech features: 22%
User Needs
From the 10 interviews:
- GPS/Bluetooth tracking
- Lightweight & durable material
- Anti-theft lock
- Strong impact resistance
- Automatic self-follow
TASK 2: Ideation Solution
Our team explored 3 design directions during the ideation phase.

Typography
ELMS SANS is the official typeface of the LugMate brand, forming the foundation of its visual identity.
Designed with a clean, modern, and geometric style, ELMS SANS delivers a professional appearance while ensuring excellent readability across both print and digital platforms.
The typeface is applied consistently to headlines, subheadings, and important brand messages, helping create a unified and recognizable brand image. Its simple yet contemporary design reflects LugMate’s values of innovation, reliability, and smart travel while providing a clear and accessible reading experience across every customer touchpoint.
The LugMate wordmark is the primary symbol of the brand identity. Designed entirely in lowercase using the ELMS SANS typeface, it creates a friendly, modern, and approachable look. The clean geometric form and balanced letter spacing ensure clarity, consistency, and strong brand recognition across all applications.

Symbol: The core symbol enclosed tightly inside a solid circle container, which is a highly condensed version of a logo. The symbol needs room to breathe inside the circle.
Color Palette
Cloud Grey and Aureolin are the signature colors of LugMate. Together, they reflect the brand's modern, smart, and reliable identity. This color combination enhances visibility while reinforcing LugMate's position as an innovative AI-powered travel companion.

TASK 3: Prototyping
In this task, we focus on
- Lugmate luggage design
- Lugmate smart app
Lugmate Luggage Design
We started by creating the initial product sketch.

Reflection
I found this project to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences throughout the entire module. Watching the idea gradually develop into a final product was incredibly fulfilling, and the overall design process, together with the communication and collaboration with the business team, was smooth and highly efficient.
The biggest challenge was understanding users' pain points and translating their needs into a practical product. As our team mainly comes from a digital product design background, such as website and mobile application design, this project introduced us to industrial product design, where we had to consider factors such as manufacturing costs, material selection, and product durability. This experience broadened our perspective and strengthened our problem-solving skills as designers.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my teammates, Chong Cheng Tao, Nabil Julius Dorn, and Ahmed Riyan, for their collaboration, creativity, and continuous support throughout the project. I would also like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Hafiz for his valuable guidance, constructive feedback, and encouragement throughout the project. His support greatly contributed to our learning and the successful completion of this collaboration. In addition, I am truly grateful to the business team for their active communication, insightful feedback, and timely responses, all of which played an important role in making this collaboration a success
