In Week 3, we presented our group project concept to Mr. Fauzi. Our initial idea was about weather, as the weather is unpredictable, and we often wonder why it rains or gets windy. We thought it would be a very interesting topic. After discussing it with us, Mr. Fauzi thought the idea was great but suggested we consider our target audience or user personas. Since there's already a wealth of weather-related content, focusing on a specific group would make our project more distinctive and appealing.
Target: Kindergarten Children
Objective:
  • To help kindergarten students recognize different types of weather
  • To introduce the idea that weather changes over time.
  • To encourage curiosity about nature and the environment.
  • To support learning through visual, playful, and interactive methods.
We chose kindergarten children aged 4–6 as the target audience because this is the stage when children are most curious about the world around them. They learn best through visuals, play, and hands-on activities, which makes information videos an effective learning tool. Weather is also something they experience every day but are only just beginning to understand. By introducing weather concepts in a fun and simple way, the video helps children build basic knowledge while staying engaged.

After receiving feedback multiple times, we finally decided that the main content would be to help kindergarten students understand patterns like sunny, rainy, and stormy days. So I started drawing storyboards.

Fig. Storyboard Sketch

Based on our storyboard, I wrote down our LATCH theory.
The information structure of the video is based on the LATCH theory to help young children understand weather changes in an organized and intuitive way.
  • Location is represented through a familiar Malaysian school route, from home to the bus stop, then to the school bus, and finally to school, showing how weather can change along the journey.
  • Alphabet is used to introduce simple safety items such as raincoats and umbrellas, helping children associate weather with basic vocabulary.
  • Time follows the natural sequence of a day, from morning, before rain, during rain, to after rain, making weather changes easy to follow.
  • Category groups information into weather signs (clouds, wind, humidity) and safety actions (protective clothing and behaviors).
  • Hierarchy presents weather intensity step by step, from sunny to cloudy, rainy, and finally a rainbow after the rain, reinforcing cause-and-effect understanding.
Based on our data research, I created four charts, one of which was based on weather forecasts.
These data come from Climates to Travel.

At the early stage of the project, I first edited a short video as a starting point to explore how weather information could be presented to kindergarten children. This initial video helped me test pacing, visuals, and storytelling in a simple and engaging way.

After getting feedback, we have made further adjustments based on the original plan.  My teammate Ivory started editing the video.

Feedback

Week 3:
During Week 3, our group presented the initial concept of our project to Mr. Fauzi. Our idea focused on weather, inspired by its unpredictable nature and our curiosity about phenomena like sudden rain or strong winds. While Mr. Fauzi agreed that the concept was interesting, he highlighted an important point: the need to define a clear target user or user persona. He reminded us that weather-related information is already widely accessible, so our project should stand out by tailoring the content to a specific audience. This feedback encouraged us to refine our direction and think more strategically about who would benefit the most from our idea.

Week 6:
Mr. Fauzi suggested that our storyboard should be based on the style of our slides, which would make editing easier later.

Week 13:

Mr. Fauzi suggested simplifying the narration by keeping each segment within 5–10 seconds and focusing only on key information. He also recommended clearly defining voice-over timing to improve pacing and avoid overly long scenes.

Additionally, the project should include specific data and statistics to support key points, along with clearer use of charts and infographics that directly align with the narration. Improving visual–audio consistency and using step-by-step or checklist-style text were also suggested to enhance clarity and readability.

Reflection

This Information Design course has been a meaningful learning experience for me. At the beginning of the semester, I found the LATCH theory confusing and often forgot to apply it in my designs. I used to focus more on visual outcomes and sometimes ignored how information should be structured. However, through continuous practice and feedback, I gradually learned how to use LATCH to organize data in a clearer and more logical way.

Starting the project early, as suggested by Mr. Fauzi, helped me develop better planning habits. Having enough time allowed me to reflect on my work, make improvements, and understand the value of revision. I also learned that clear communication is more important than adding a lot of information. When a video contains too much content, it can easily become overwhelming and difficult to understand, especially for young audiences.

Working in a group challenged me to listen to different perspectives and communicate my ideas more clearly. Although it was sometimes difficult to balance everyone’s opinions, the process helped me grow in teamwork and collaboration. With guidance and feedback from Mr. Fauzi, I became more confident in organizing information and presenting ideas through video design.

Overall, this course helped me grow not only as a designer but also as a communicator. I now have a stronger awareness of how to structure information effectively and deliver meaningful messages to my audience.
