Visuals are a powerful persuasive medium to provide
most of our information about the world.

Symbolism and Imagery: Certain symbols and images may carry different meanings in
different cultures. Designers should be mindful of potential cultural interpretations to avoid unintentional misunderstandings or offense.
Color Considerations: Colors can have
cultural significance, and their meanings may vary
across different societies. Understanding the
cultural associations of colors can help designers make
appropriate choices.
Typography and Language: Choosing fonts and
text styles that are culturally appropriate is
important.
Additionally, considering language variations
and ensuring accurate translations is crucial for
reaching
diverse audiences.
Inclusive Design: Designers should strive to create products and experiences that are accessible and inclusive for people from
various cultural backgrounds, including those with different abilities and needs.
User Research: Conducting thorough user research, including ethnographic studies
and user testing across diverse groups, helps designers gain insights into cultural
preferences and behaviors.
Localization: Adapting designs to specific
cultural contexts through localization can enhance the
relevance
and acceptance of a product or service.
Cultural Awareness Training: Design teams may
benefit from cultural awareness training to develop a
deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and
sensitivities.
Task
PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL
In this project, we need to choose a specific area under
the theme of everyday design. We will explore how design
can influence and reflect culture, behavior, and identity
through common objects, environments, and systems.
In the first week, we need to find people to form a
group of six people. After that, we started to discuss
our ideas for the project. Initially we proposed six
ideas, and we chose to do the Multifunctional Cultural
Tableware Set through a group voting session.
Topic/Ideas :
Tableware Design - Multifunctional Cultural Tableware Set.
Modular combination for multicultural eating habits:
removable components like chopstick heads, forks, spoons,
folding blades, and pancake holders (e.g., Indian/Middle
Eastern style).
AR smart tags on the handles: scan the pattern on the
cutlery package with your phone and watch a short video to
learn about the proper use of cutlery and table manners in
various countries (e.g., Japanese chopsticks taboos.) Material: bamboo fiber + food-grade stainless
steel, high-temperature resistant and biodegradable. Design
Philosophy: With "Respect Differences, Integrate
Commonalities" as the core, we use modular design,
culturally inclusive symbols, and sustainable materials to
create tableware that is suitable for daily use by
global users while promoting cross-cultural
understanding.

why the culture was chosen.
Quotes are necessary evidence of the research.

Reflections
In this course of daily culture, I learned about
the common sense of cultural identity. Daily culture
is to help people establish a common identity and
enhance social cohesion through shared customs,
festivals, and traditions. Daily culture is an
indispensable part of our lives. It is not only a
continuation of history but also an important
source of social cohesion and personal belonging.
Through daily culture, we learn to respect
traditions, understand others, and find belonging in
common customs and values. However, in the
fast-paced life of modern society, many traditional
cultures are gradually being ignored or even
forgotten. Should we reflect on whether we have lost
those daily cultures that make life warmer and
society more harmonious in the pursuit of
modernization? Protecting and inheriting daily
culture is not only a respect for history but also
a responsibility for the future. Let us re-examine
the value of daily culture, inject more cultural
awareness into daily life, blend tradition with
modernity, and bring more meaning and vitality to
individuals and society.
This time we studied the tableware culture. We chose to study Chinese chopsticks and Chilean knives and forks. We combined them to create a combination of daily dining culture. In the designed model, we added AR QR codes. In order to make it easier for users to understand and use them, we also added representative elements of China and Chile on the cover of the model. I also learned about the tableware culture of other countries, which also made me better understand how to proceed with this project.
China's chopsticks and Chile's knives, forks, and spoons represent the typical characteristics of Eastern and Western tableware culture. Chopsticks embody the cultural spirit of harmony, wisdom, and family reunion, while knives, forks, and spoons reflect the cultural connotations of table manners and social stratification. Although their origins and functions are different, they both play an important role in daily life and continue to integrate and innovate with the development of globalization. Tableware culture is not only a dining tool but also an important carrier of cultural heritage and social values.
