Adobe Photoshop is the reason why numerous professionals like graphic designers to web designers prefer using this application.  Graphic style and also digital photography is one of the most typical.

The importance of Photoshop for the Graphic Designer:
~ Express your creativity
Create graphic design
Restoration of old images:Utilising Photoshop’s healing brush, clone stamp, as well as patch tools worn pictures can be recovered.
~Integrate graphics with text artistically:Developing excellent graphic design requires the combination of images and information. Photoshop offers the adaptability of blending, as well as pictures that match the information to produce a preferred impact. Using embossed, beveled and also dropping dark results, you can make the message aesthetically pleasing. Similarly, photos can be enhanced by adjusting lighting, contrast, and sharpness.
~Make use of brushes
~Change photo color:You can convert color photos to black and white photos with the help of this image editing tool. You can also add effects to your pictures to provide a unique look. There are many built-in results in Photoshop to change the feel and look of a picture.
~Rectify mistakes in photographs:A few of the pictures look bad because of darkness, red-eye impact as well as inadequate lights. With the help of Photoshop tools, you can conceal the weak points as well as boost the aesthetic allure of the photos. You can additionally crop some parts of a picture if it is unneeded.
Photograph manipulation involves the transformation or alteration of a photograph using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results.
Digital Imaging converts the printed text, artwork, and photographs into digital images using a digital scanner or another imaging device.

Week2 lecture
Introduction to composition
1. Introduction to basic composition
FOCAL POINT:A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps your viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.
~SCALE & HIERARCHY:Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.
~BALANCE THE ELEMENTS:A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it. Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored elements.
~WHITE SPACE:White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition.White space when used strategically can help boost your design’s clarity and overall look by balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.
2. Rule of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This imaginary grid yields nine parts with four intersection points.

When you position the most important elements of your image at these intersection points, you produce a much more natural image.  It is also suggested that any horizon is placed on either the top horizontal line or bottom horizontal line.

Fig.example

The Rule of Thirds is a way to:
·Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.
·Creatively use negative space.
·Create conversation between the subject and background.

3. Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
In design, the Golden Ratio boils down to aesthetics — creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion.  When applied to design, the Golden Ratio provides a sense of artistry.
The Golden Ratio is a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout. One very simple way to apply the Golden Ratio is to set your dimensions to 1:1.618.

4.  Composition [Framing & Cropping]
Through watching this video, I learned that when taking photos, I need to grasp the balance of the whole picture, as well as the composition of the picture, the emptiness and reality of the main characters and the auxiliary objects.

Tool Box

Marquee Selection Tools
Select and Mask

~Lasso Tool:The Lasso Tool allow you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
three different tool options:Lasso、Polygonal Lasso、Magnetic Lasso.
The Lasso Tool is great to use with a graphic tablet because it is similar to a pencil. Unlike a mouse or trackpad, a graphic tablet can give a better flow when drawing and making selections.
~Pen Tool:The pen tool is the way that you add these points and the way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look.Remember, the fewer points, the smoother a path will be.
~Layering:Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive editing. My adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original image. The layers contain all the extra information and/ or images you want to add to the original file.

Week4 lectureAdjustment Layer:

The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.
With the adjustment layers, you can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know.

Basic understanding of Adjustment Layer:
When you add an adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image and a Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you’ve selected will pop up. The Properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment layer, which in turn will modify your image.

BRIGHTNESS / CONTRAST:
Brightness / Contrast makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image.
The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

LEVEL:
Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights. It’s one of the most used tools in the adjustment layer panel, and using just a touch of levels will go a long way in correcting your images.

CURVES:
Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.

EXPOSURE
Exposure lets you adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.
Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image, Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only.

SELECTIVE COLOR
The Selective Color adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.

Filters
Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor.
There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

Week5 lectureBASIC PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOTING

EXPOSURE SETTING

EXPOSURE:
In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.

The main parts of the camera:

Camera body:Shutter/Image sensor/LCD screen
Camera lens:Aperture/ Iris

The camera body is a light proof box.

There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos.

  1. IRIS: Iris/Aperture is control the flow of light entering the lens.

IRIS: Iris/Aperture is measured by f-stop, indicated by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4,f/2 , f/ 2.8, f/ 4, f/ 5.6, f/ 8, f/ 11, f/ 16,f/22 , f/32..
The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.

2:SHUTTER:
The shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film.

SHUTTER SPEED:
Shutter speed is measured in seconds: 1/1000s,1/500 s,1/250 s,1/125 s,1/60 s,1/30 s,1/15 s,1/8 s,1/4 s,1/2 s,1 s, 2 s, 3 s…

sample

ISO:
Originally referred to the sensitivity of film—its "light gathering" ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity—the signal gain—of the camera's sensor.

The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400,640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400….

The lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

LENS PERSPECTIVE
The are wide angle lens, standard lens and tele lens.

Appropriate lens provided desire framing, lens choice affects angle of view.

Different lenses are designed for different fordifferent purposes. Lenses can be categorized by FOCAL LENGTH.

FOCAL LENGTH:
The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa.

FOCAL LENGTH:
Focal length is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.

DEPTH OF FIELD:
The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus.

DEPTH OF FIELD:
The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.

Wide angle lenses are ideal for fitting a large area into your frame.

Wide angle lens is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.

Standard lens offer a fairly accurate representation of what the human eye sees, both in terms of visual angle and perspective.

Images created by standard lens are perceived as more natural than those taken with other types of camera lenses.

Tele lenses are great for isolating a subject that is far away.

Tele lenses allow you to photograph subjects from a distance thanks to their magnification.

DSLR V.S SMARTPHONE
Smartphones vs Cameras = Convenience vs Quality
DSLR cameras are designed to capture images. Phones are designed to carry out a multitude
of functions.
Phone cameras are very limited by size. The size of the lens and the size of the sensor that captures the photos. Entry-level DSLR have much larger lenses and sensors than mobile phones do.

Week6 lecturePOSTER DESIGN

Introduction:
The principles of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition. The fundamental principles of design are: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space.

A design doesn’t have to strictly follow these rules to be “good.” Some absolutely mind-blowing designs ignore one or more of the principles of design in order to create an eye-catching and effective work.

example for breaking design rules: The Bed Moved by Rebecca Schiff, Designed by Janet Hansen

The 7 principles of poster design

1.EMPHASIS
The principles of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition. The fundamental principles of design are: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition,Proportion, Movement and White Space.

example for principle of design emphasis: poster with violin guitar on stage

2.Balance and alignment

The principles of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition.
The fundamental principles of design are: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space.

3.CONTRAST

Contrast is what people mean when they say a design “pops.”It comes away from the page and sticks in your memory.

Contrast creates space and difference between elements inyour design. Your background needs to be significantly different from the color of your elements so they work harmoniously together and are readable.

example for principle of design contrast: black panther cat design

4.REPETITION
If you limit yourself to two strong typefaces or three strong colors, you’ll soon find you’ll have to repeat some things. That’s ok! It’s often said that repetition unifies and strengthens a design.
If only one thing on your band poster is in blue italic sans-serif, it can read like an error. If three things are in blue italic sans-serif, you’ve created a motif and are back in control of your design.

example for principle of design repetition: vertical numbers and text design

Proportion is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other. It often helps to approach your design in sections, instead of as a whole.

example for principle of design proportion: vintage designed poker run poster

Movement is controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your audience.
Movement creates the story or the narrative of your work.

5.WHITE SPACE
White space (or negative space) is the only one that specifically deals with what you don’t add. White space is exactly that—the empty page around the elements in your composition.
For beginning designers it can be a perilous zone. Often simply giving a composition more room to breathe can upgrade it from mediocre to successful.

Week7 lectureDOUBLE EXPOSURE

Double Exposure & Image Blending Mode

Long Tradition of Double Exposure Photography Fuses Two Worlds in One

Double Exposure Photography
Double exposure photography refers to merging multiple images. The goal is to make them surreal, emotional, or humorous. They usually feature silhouettes.
Double exposure effect may look complicated at first. But it’s easy to make in-camera and in Adobe Photoshop. You don’t need a double exposure camera, as there are a few other ways you can create them.
In the editing world, you have endless possibilities. You can transform ordinary photographs into powerful masterpieces.
Turn your head to the right by Dan Mountford
Using the Tilt-Shift Effect
Photoshop has a great tilt-shift tool that will transform your photos into soft works of art.
If you want to be extra creative, blur one of your photos instead of the entire image. Or blur everything except for one important detail.
To add this feature, go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift.

A double-exposed photo of a female model

Create fake reflection
There are many ways you can create reflections. One of them is creating a double-exposure with the help of a separate window photo.
This is an example of main subject surface with raindrops and bokeh. This help to add interesting textures to a multiple exposure photography.

double-exposure image of Taya Ivanova's self portrait and raindrops

Experiment with simple portraits and details textured
Combining something plain with something complicated will give you a balanced result. It will also save a lot of simple photos that you might discard.

Atmospheric double-exposure image of a female model overlayed with textured raindrops

Convert your results to Black & White
A lack of colour will strengthen the emotions in your double-exposure images. If you want to express your work in a vulnerable way, experiment with this.
It gives them a unique depth and allows you to experiment with something interesting just like  film photography.

Black and white double exposure effect of flowers over a female model

Work with silhouette
Many double exposure photographers choose to work with silhouettes. But what if you worked with silhouettes only?
It would give you a fun and doable challenge. And an opportunity to show very creative sides of yourself.
Try silhouettes of yourself, other people, or random objects.Anything else that catches your eye can create unique composite images.

double-exposure image of a male silhouette and a forest

Pick two random photo
A random process doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful. Your results might create a story of their own, one that others will find encouraging.
A lot of  double exposures photography were happy accidents. But they led to great feedback and even greater creative growth. Try and forget about any other double-exposure ideas. Shoot interesting textures, shapes and forms instead.

A silhouette of a woman double exposed with an image of clouds

Make simple objects look fascinating
Take photos of everyday objects you usually take for granted.Try to make them look like something else.
A silhouette of a dull-looking building could become the outline of a starry sky like the photo below.
This technique will enhance your imagination.

Double-exposure images of a cityscape and starry sky

Use Shadow
Outlines of any kind are fantastic to work with for double-exposure photography. Shadows are as effective as silhouettes in this genre. They’re fascinating to work with.
Take a photo of someone’s shadow and transform it into a story.
You can do anything your heart desires with outlines of this sort. All you have to do is go out, take photos of a few shadows, and turn them into something beautiful.

Two images combined in one, using a male shadow and a mountain landscape

PHOTOSHOP : Blend Modes
Working with blend modes is almost always an experimental process. Because it’s nearly impossible to predict the results, you always seem to end up experimenting with different modes and Fill Opacities until you get the results you’re looking for.

Photoshop Log

A particular blending mode works really well on more difficult subjects like glass, smoke, fire and lightning. Take these images for example.
How to combine the smoke on top of the image of the musicians? A real mess could be made of this and it could become very difficult and time consuming.

Week9 lectureDIGITAL SURREALISM

Realism Versus Surrealism
Realism
Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."
Surrealism
A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality

Surrealism
Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of he subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.

Fueled by the teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dada artists, surrealists like Salvador Dalí promoted free association and dream imagery.

Dadaism ~An anti war art movement with art works that is  satirical and nonsensical in nature.
Salvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.

What is Digital Surrealism?
Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.
How to start creating Surrealism artworks?
Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
Primitive or child-like designs
Capturing your Dream
Sketch It Out

Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly.Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.

Find Reference Images

Gathering reference images will help you greatly in realizing your new idea. Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.

Mindset During Creation

"Does this look real?"

Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.

Make it happen to the best of your ability.

When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.

Photoshop makes it easier than ever to create surrealist images, requiring just a modicum of
photomontage skill to produce impressive results.

Week10lectureINTRO TO AFTER EFFECTS

What is After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.

After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

What is After Effects?

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement.

Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story.

You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Reflection

Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. Each exercise has a video that you can watch and do. The video taught me to complete the exercises step by step, so I didn't have to worry about falling behind. Mr Fauzi often gives us suggestions or ideas for our work. He also taught us to look at Pinterest for ideas when we didn't have much of an idea for a project.

In this class, I also understand that the creativity of typography is very interesting, but I have found that my shortcoming is the lack of new creativity, so I will pay more attention to the advertisements around me to learn. In addition, I found that adjusting the color, contrast, and effect can affect the mood and message conveyed by the image. Each tweak plays a different role in enhancing the visual narrative.

In general, this course is very interesting to me. It shows all my creativity and better expresses my design. Although 14 weeks seems like a short time, I gained a lot of useful knowledge in this module. This will be of great significance and help to my future courses.
